A kitty, a puppy, and a cereal killer
Halloween has come and gone and we managed to make it through unscathed. We managed to keep the monsters at bay and even got out to do a little trick or treating. Swee’Pea was a “pink kitty” because, as she’ll tell you, pink is her favorite color. TheMonk was a puppy because - well, puppies just go so well with kitties, don’t they?
The evening got off to a rough start when we put TheMonk in his puppy costume to find it didn’t fit. In fact it was cutting off the circulation in his legs and restricting his oxygen intake up top. A few seams were ripped out to alleviate the pressure and he was good to go.
We hit a few houses on the street (note to neighbors, if you’re going to put out decorations, you should probably be home for trick or treaters) and then headed back to casa childsplay and doled out candy to all the Spidermen and Cinderellas in the neighborhood.
At the end of the evening, Swee’Pea and TheMonk even got to taste their very first Tootsie Roll. After seeing what it did to their teeth, we’ll probably just stick with Kit Kat from now on.
Oh, and to add to the spookiness of the evening, TheMonk kept telling me that we needed to give candy to “the boy upstairs.” He was very convincing. And while I just nodded to the Monk, I made sure I left a Hershey’s bar on the landing upstairs before we went to bed. Far be it from me to keep a little boy (ghost or no ghost) from some candy on Halloween.
Below are some photos of the kids (and one of me in my “cereal killer” costume). I hope your Halloween was free of real ghosts and the treats outweighed the tricks! What did your kids dress up as? What was your favorite costume you saw last night - both for adults and kids? (I need ideas for next year!)

Too cute. It looks like they had fun.

Great photos. We went to a few houses with decorations–even lit up–where nobody answered the door. I almost wanted to bang harder and ask what the deal was.

Great pictures! (Swee’pea’s eyes = WOW. And The Monk … he was working those puppy-dog eyes. I loved his impression of Rolf at the keyboard.)
As far as the best costumes? Let me think … one child was in a kangaroo costume, complete with a joey in the pouch. One of the Scout leaders at church was Mad-Eye from HP. (Really impressive!!)

Abby the dog (now famous from her pictures on this blog) had a devil’s red cape and tail with horns. She didn’t want to wear the horns though, so on her walk I wore the horns and people thought we were trick or treating! We got a few handfuls of candy and some doggie treats too. Next year, Little Miss Bri could be an Angel and JT could be a devil. Hmmmm…it’s possible it should be the other way around???LOL.

One more thing, is it possible that the owners of those homes that didn’t come to their doors were out trick or treating with their kids when you came by? Who was answering your door when you were out with the munchkins?

Ane was a ballerina (her choice) and Tad was a pirate (his father picked it out because it was on sale at Gymboree). Once kids have an opinion about what they want to be, it’s all over, so Ane will pretty much get to choose what she wants (within reason) from this year on out. My sister plans on getting camos in Tad’s size for next year, and we will paint his face up, too. Though we were dicussing with the Brain and Head’s parents about dressing all four kids up as Star Wars characters next year…
Let’s see, good costumes from this year… Little Mo’s family (our neighbors) all went as insects (butterfly, ladybug, spider) and their Dad went as the wacky-wig exterminator who had huffed a little too much DDT.

Sounds fun! My boys were a skeleton and Tigger, respectively. I was a tired dad with his hands full.

I especially LOVE the fact that TheMonk had black socks with his brown sandals…too cute! Sounds like the kids had a blast. As for handing out candy and taking the kids? The Hubs and I tag-team it every year. Last year I took the kids out. This year he took the kids out. The other one gets to hand out candy the entire night.

The girls went as a lion and a giraffe. Pistol likes kitties so she was the lion and since LongRifle has long eyelashes I figured we couldn’t go wrong dressing her up as a giraffe—not to mention that the Children’s Hospital of the Central Valley where they spent all that time in the NICU last year has George the giraffe as its mascot.
As for the best costume, hands down it was the older man with either a shaved head or just bald that had painted his face orange, drew lines from top to bottom and added black to make himself look like a jack-o-lantern (I wish I had taken a picture)! He even had a cute green blob of paint for a stem. I’m not sure if you’re interested in shaving your head next year. I am keeping it in mind for my dear hubby seeing as how he’s only a few years away from losing all of his hair.

Awww…they’re too cute. I love that he was stashing candy. Smart boy.

I make my son’s costumes. Last year he was a pirate, this year a knight. I dressed up as a maiden and took him trick or treating while my husband answered the door (he wouldn’t dress up either).
The worst costumes I saw was 2 pre-teens not wearing costumes but still asking for candy. I wouldn’t have given them any candy, no costumes defeats the point of trick or treating.
Otherwise I saw very few trick or treaters and they were all princesses. I guess my son is the only boy who trick or treats on our street.

A co-worker who was in a wheelchair taped/glued Swanson and
Banquet Meal boxes all over his chair and himself and came
as “Meals on Wheels”. Or, glue “smarties” all over your pants and go as “Smarty-pants”.
