Ace of Cakes
I’ve been known to be competitive. I don’t like to lose. So when UndomesticDiva started talking trash about what a great cake decorator she is, I had to chime in. Smack talk led to smack talk and eventually a throwdown was discussed. For the record, I didn’t get to choose the theme: Mario Brothers. But, I rose to the challenge, figured out the fondant thing and put my best effort forward. The video below shows the process. The first minute is me talking about the cake and then… 3 and a half minutes of cake making – at lightning speed. Skip to the 4:30 mark to see the end product. And all I ask is, when deciding which cake is best, notice my integration of technology. Yes, that’s an iTouch with Mario Brothers games being played on it. Leave who you think is better in the comments section. (Check out her cake here.) This isn’t about any tangible prize – just pride. Lots of pride.

Dude- great job!!!! wow! I esp liked the soundtrack- A for Effort! The only thing I would say, is that the colors should have been livelier, but otherwise- AMAZING.

I think your cake looks awesome, but I vote for Megan b/c of the characters she made. I wouldn’t have really known yours was a Mario cake if I didn’t know the theme of this competition but I would’ve recognized hers either way b/c of those characters.

Am impressed. By both of you. How am I supposed to pick??

So let me say for the record that I am a huge fan of cake decorating art. Love Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss. So much so that I bought my daughter the Cake Gourmet for Christmas when really I just wanted it for myself to try and be all Ace of Cakes like (word to the wise don’t get it it sucks). That said I am quite impressed, I don’t know that I can do much other than to admire your amazing skills. I think I’d lack the patience.
You done VERY good. But *ducking and covering* I’m going with Megan only because she had the actual Mario Bros characters made out of gum paste (plus I’m afraid she might cut me if I don’t vote for her)

wow – good job! I’m not sure I can even vote- both of your cakes are so amazing. Well done!

You definitely get the points for soundtrack. Well for the whole thing really. UndomesticDiva’s was adorable but using the wire to make the brick pattern really put’s yours over the edge. Nice job dude.

They were both really good & way more effort than I ever want to put into pretty much anything (which is kinda BS, bc I put that much effort into all kinds of things, before I realize what I’ve signed myself up for.) But overall, I think I’m voting for Megan, bc of amount of detail, color & fear of retribution.
Oh, and Matthew, your video presentation was waaaay better.

wow! I have a hard time believing that you have never used fondont before, your technique was so good. Good job remembering to use real frosting on the outside as well. I like your cake the best because of it’s elegance and use of Mario elements.

Great job! But I’m thinking you’re lucky the bet didn’t involve the loser posting pictures of themselves wearing fondant.
And I’m horrified that you didn’t bake the cake from scratch. HORRIFIED. But hey, costume changes. Bonus!

wow! Your cake decorating skills have improved a lot since June. Yes, you can always count on a vote from your mother.

SUPER impressed, really. Thought you’d choke but apparently you pay attention well when watching those cake shows. *claps*

You get my vote, mostly because I couldn’t get Undomestic Diva’s video to play, but still. Default (the 2 sweetest words in the English language! ) Awesome!

Wow, you did an awesome job. Way more crafty and bakey than I will ever get. LOL
Going to check out Megan’s now, I’ll let you know who I think should win shortly.

Both cakes were really fantastic. I loved the vibrance in her color, but your Toad at the top really “takes the cake.” You’ve got my vote!

Awesome job Matthew! Your video was better but Megan’s cake had slightly more detail… It was very hard to choose though.

wow.
You guys.
WOW.
I am very impressed. Like, ridiculously impressed.
I have to give my vote to Megan…it’s the whole gum paste thing. I am scared to death of it. but, seriously, I bow to you, sir. It’s awesome.

If it weren’t for the toad at the top (and the itouch) i wouldn’t have known it was a Mario Bros cake. I liked Megan’s better.

I just watched your video with my Mario-obsessed 6yo and he LOVED it. He would like to tell you:
“I like the video because I like the cake you made. I like how you put the green mushroom on it. I like how you put your Ipod on it and showed us the video game.”
You have our vote!
Comment by Maria @BOREDmommy — February 9, 2010 @ 9:29 am
I am very, very impressed!! You get my vote.
Comment by Julie — February 9, 2010 @ 10:56 am
It’s a tough choice because both cakes look awesome, but I’m going to have to give my vote to you! Good luck!

dude, I’m impressed. great job. I think the colors could’ve been brighter, but really I could’ve never made something that cool. How did it taste?

Awesome, I am really impressed. You got my vote, I have to go with a twin dad you know!

(Copied from megan’s.)
I am a little torn on this one. On one hand, I think I should go with the cake I like the best. On the other, I feel like I should be all nice and go with the person who I have known the longest. Or as his SIL said, the pity vote. Ahem. Sorry Matthew.
Megan, I think your cake looks better. Colors are brighter, cake looks a bit more Mario-ish. You both did great though. A zillion times better than I could have done.
Comment by Issa — February 10, 2010 @ 8:57 am
Matthew, of course you get my vote. What are you doing in June? After you practice on your kids maybe you could make a cake for your nephew Lance. Truthfully, I am WAY impressed.

I am very impressed. When I heard about this, I thought you would totally get your ass handed to you. I am happy to say that you didn’t! My hubby was very impressed with your use of technology and the I think the brick pattern was awesome! I do have to vote for Megan’s though. I believe her colors are better and her use of characters great. I do appreciate the fact that you used music and that it was 4 minutes long though. Also loved the fact that they just started handing you crap at the store when you told them that you wanted to work with fondant. Only one problem with this whole thing as I see it. Your kids are going to expect much more on their birthdays if you do a cake like this for a contest! Much love. Hope it was tasty.

Whoa!! You truly outdid yourself – that is really awesome. And I’m really impressed not only at the result but the execution, as well: your technique for laying and cutting fondant was fantastic.
Comment by Elisa @ Globetrotting in Heels — February 14, 2010 @ 7:24 am
Oh wow! That was awesome. I’m not sure I could have such good results on a multi layered cake on my first try. Great job!
