Shamelessly loving Graco

When you have twins, you accumulate a lot of stuff. One of the areas that you absolutely have to buy more than one of is car seats. And then you have to buy them again. And then again.

And, if you’re like me and my wife, since one of us dropped off in the morning and the other picked up, we needed to buy seats for both of our cars. When they were infants, we bought two carriers and four bases. But after they grew out of the infant carriers, we bought four each. And every time we bought our seats, we bought Graco seats. I felt like they were the best seats available and who wouldn’t want their children to be safe?

But suddenly, we have quite a collection of car seats. And we naively thought we’d hold onto them so we’d have seats for another child, if and when that day would come. But we recently learned that car seats actually expire! So now we have two infant seats that we no longer can use and an infant rapidly approaching. Baby #3 is due to arrive in early June. We need to get an infant carrier.

Do you think Graco has a buy 10 (plus a Graco Double Stroller!) get one free program? If anyone from Graco wants to help out a loyal consumer, I’d gladly accept!

Graco Collection
Our collection of Graco Car Seats and a Double Stroller.

  1. I love the Graco seats. In fact? I own the pink/gray Nautilus. My best friend’s little girl is the most frequent rider now, but last summer K requested that I bring that one to Colorado. She was 7.5 and WANTED to be harnessed. I think that says something for the comfort of the seat!

  5. Dude. Babies R’ Expensive does this thing where you can trade them in towards a new one. 25% off or something. Call them and ask. Seriously.

  6. This looks all too familiar.

  7. Seconding what Issa said. Babies ‘R Us does a trade-in coupon program occasionally. That being said, the conventional wisdom that I’ve read around the internets says that car seats are pretty good for 10 years, unless said car seat was ever involved in a car accident and was holding a child at the time. We used Ane’s original infant car seat (which we also used for Tad, and another friend borrowed as well) for Rerun once he was born, and all was well. What can I say… I’m cheap. My sister was horrified - she is militant about replacing her car seats every 5 years on the dot.

  10. Send your blog link to Graco. Their customer service people are SO nice and helpful. (We only have 4 of their seats, but a ton of bases!)

The Babies R Us trade happens by us every so often (not all the time) and double check that their prices (with the discount) are cheaper than buying it elsewhere. I found that even with the discount, the carseat we wanted was cheaper at a different big store. (Target? Walmart? can’t remember.) It can be a good deal though - just check first before buying.

Good luck! (Craigslist for a single stroller?)

  11. I’m in a similar boat. One due early June & previous infant car seat about to expire. Can you sell all the car seats (not the expired infants or boosters) on Craig’s List to buy an infant one? And Babies R Us is/was doing a “turn in old car seat get 25% off new one” deal. /assvice

  14. Right there with you…and we had the Graco double stroller (I affectionately called it “the bus”, four bases/two infant carriers, and two sets of each car seat. I had no idea they expire. Huh. I sold all of mine but the boosters at a recent garage sale.

  19. Hi Matthew! I’m really glad the Graco people came through for you - you deserve it! And congrats on baby #3. I hadn’t checked your blog in a while and just saw the news. I’m the one who won the Chicco double stroller 2 years ago based on the photo contest you ran. My twin girls (who weren’t even born yet at the time- my boys were in the picture holding the girls’ ultrasound) are now two yrs. old and we use the stroller to walk around the neighborhood everyday! Thanks again for that great giveaway. Your twins are gorgeous - growing fast. Best wishes for the next one!
